The Record breaking Whitby Crew of: Marc Wilson (stroke), Ryan Lowther, Andrew Morley, Jason Jeffrey & Max Dossor

Rowers from Whitby Coastal Rowing Club broke the records for 'Fastest traditional boat' and 'Fastest Gig' while taking part in the 22.7 miles marathon rowing race across Loch Ness, from Fort Augustus to Dores, near Inverness.

Racing in the Whitby Fishermen's rowing club gig "Henryella" using wooden Macon oars from Whitby's Friendship Rowing club, the crew rowed the span of Loch Ness in 3 Hours 2 minutes 21 Seconds breaking the previous gig record by nearly 26 minutes.

Crew stroke & WCRC Club Captain Marc (Speaking to Scarborough News) said “It was absolutely fantastic, the conditions on the day were really good.

“Before we set off their was a minutes silence on the water, with a lot of the boats raising their oars in the air as a mark of respect to the queen.

“Seeing the sheer amount of boats setting off while the bagpipes echoed down the Loch was awesome

“We got off to a really good start, staying with the more modern carbon sliding seaters which was a surprise to us.

“After losing a bit of ground due to a problem with one of the stretchers, we got to the half way mark in around an hour and a half, which we were honestly not expecting, so we knew we were making good tracks and on for the record.

“The conditions got a little worse in the second half of the race, actually favouring our type of boat and after racing neck and neck with a 12-man gig from Ireland we just got ahead at the end, beating them by around 10 boat lengths.
