Session Three

In this session, after a recap of last week,  we will go through our first technique drills 'Circles' and 'Double Slaps' before going for a short steady row to practice manoeuvring the boat.

Circles

Circles are a great exercise for showing how the distances between your hands effects the stability of the boat.

  • Sit at backstops with legs flat and back straight.

  • Keep the blades feathered (flat to the water)

  • Roll the hands and blades round in circles, backwards and forwards.

  • See how many full rotations you can do in 30s

Double Slaps

This is a great drill for identifying your hand positions relative to the water.

  • Sitting at backstops, legs flat, back straight

  • Slap both blades on the water together.

  • How many of these can you do in 30 seconds?

Turning

Next, we are going to practice some simple turns.

By putting more pressure on either our green or red oar, we will get a feel for how we turn and steer doubles and singles or aide the coxswain in the quad around particularly tight turns.

We will perform a gentle slalom or 'S' shape course before turning the boat 180. Repeat 3 times.
